Are Muscle Cars and Corvettes Good Investments?
|
 |
|
This answer
is YES, but only certain cars are considered investments. There is a difference between "Investment" and "Collector" cars.
Definitions
–
Investment car –
Is a vehicle with extreme popularity, rarity, originality, or excellent History. Really good investment vehicles will have
all qualities. These cars can stand the test of time. These cars can be or are certified by some type of expert in these vehicles.
Investment cars can make large jumps in value. Most investment cars will steadily increase in value over time no matter what
the economy or stock market does.
Collector Car –
Is a vehicle with large popularity, some rarity, some originality, or some exciting History. These cars will also stand the
test of time in a lesser capacity. These cars are well liked by the general public and tend to be more affordable. Collector
cars can make large jumps in value like investment cars, but very rare. Also if the conditions are right a collector car can
make the leap to Investment car. Most collector cars will slowly increase in value over time but will fluctuate slightly when
economy does.
Car Club - A club
is a group of people who collect a certain type or model of vehicle. Sometimes a club is just about a specific year of vehicle.
Today you can
find a Club for almost any car ever made. There is nothing wrong with this. In fact car clubs are a great source of information.
I suggest before buying anything talk to your local club or join one. I know there are many people who collect the Ford Pinto.
The pinto has a unique history but was not a mile stone car. Also because of the history (boom) the following is rather small.
I am going to give you an example of a collector car vs. Investment car. In 1965 Ford built the Mustang, it was about $1800
new. Also 1965 GM produced Corvette, it was about $2300 new. Today the Mustang on average is about $10,000, and the Corvette
is about $50,000. As for the Ford pinto it is about $2000 for an excellent condition car today, which happens to be the same
price as new. I think you are starting to see the picture.
Research, Research,
Research!!!
Or R3
I like to call it. These are some steps to help you make a purchase.
Research the car!
Is it what the owner claims? Make sure it has the options you want or what is desired. Do a title search, maybe contact past
owners. Double check to be sure the vehicle was not in an accident. Beware lots of people out there are trying to pass off
"clones" of desirable cars. Keep in mind that some modification can hurt the vehicles price.
Research the Price!
Is the owner asking a fair price? The internet is a great place to find out all sorts of information. You can search many
auto sales places to make a comparison. Remember to try and compare like cars to each other. Condition and miles are very
important to keep in mind; for the most part these factors are a big part of the price.
Research the Market!
Is the car going to hold its value? What is the History of the vehicle line? Auctions sites are a good way to find out what
cars sold for in the past. Then you can compare to now. You can also search the internet for what the car sold for new. Also
like a said before call a local car club of the vehicle you are interested in. Most clubs are very nice and helpful. They
may even know of someone with a very nice car for sale.

1989 Corvette ZR-2 Sells at 2009 Barrett-Jackson This 1989 Corvette ZR-2
was a factory engineering concept that answered that age old question: What would happen if we dropped a 454 in a C4 Corvette?
In additional to the high horsepower engine, the concept was treated with a special orange exterior, ZR-2 badges and has been
signed by GM development engineer/driver John Heinricy. This GM Heritage Collection Corvette sold at the 2009 Barrett-Jackson
Collector Car Auction for $65,000. _____________________________________________________________________________

1965 Corvette Display Auctioned Off for $705,000!
Being from Detroit, we have a great appreciation for Car Shows, car displays
and all that goes into marketing cars to the world. This story takes us back to 1965.
GM and Chevy used Autoramas to display cars and bring the technology and vehicles
to customers in a revolutionary way for the time. The Corvette was nearly 3 years old in '65 and the hype had died down
a little in that time. They decided they would create a cut-away display of the Corvette to show how not only the beauty
of the car, but also how advanced the vehicle was.
Reportedly the display's location was unknown for sometime until the
1990's when it was returned to the US and purchased by Al Wiseman. This week it went on the auction block to the highest
bidder looking to revel in Corvette history. The final bid on the vehicle was $640,000 and with the buyer's commission
of 10%, the final cost coming in at a whopping $704,000!

The first Chevrolette Corvette ZR1 produced sold for a $1
million
The Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction who took place last weekend had some really attractive cars for
sale, especially American muscle cars. Besides the Shelby GT500KR with glassroof, which we wrote about a few days ago, on
sale was also the first Chevrolette Corvette ZR1 produced, which got sold for a solid $1 million. Jay Leno, well known for
his passion for cars couldn’t have missed the auction, and he was the one that drove the car to the block.
The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is the fastest car ever produced by General Motors, being powered by a supercharged 6.2 liter
LS9 V8 engine, which develops 620 hp and takes the car from 0 to 60 in 4 seconds and to a top speed of over 200 mph (320 km/h).

003 Sells for 1 Million Dollars
#003, the oldest surviving Corvette was auctioned at Barrett-Jackson on Saturday for One Million Dollars.
Okay, I can't say that without thinking about Austin Power's Dr. Evil. But sold it did for $1,080,000. No word on who the
buyer was although word on the street is that both ProTeam Corvette's Terry Michaelis and Dana Mecum from Mecum auctions were
both unsuccessful in bidding for this truly historic Corvette. January 22, 2006

Barrett-Jackson Corvette Sales Top $12.6 Million
By the time the final gavel fell on the 2006 Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, 113 Corvettes crossed the auction block for a total combined
sales of $12,679,362.00. A sales commission of 8% is factored into our totals as published at the Barrett-Jackson website.
This year's highest selling Corvette was #003, the oldest surviving Corvette
which sold for $1 Million Dollars. Dave Ressler, owner of several multi-brand dealerships in South Dakota and Montana, outbid
Terry Michaelis of ProTeam Corvettes and Dana Mecum of Mecum Auctions.
Other Notable Corvettes include:
A 1967 Convertible 427/435 car sold for $378,000. The Corvette received a
Top Flight award in September 2005 and has been featured twice in Corvette Enthusiast Magazine.
A 1969 L-88 Coupe sold for $334,800. Nicknamed Earthquake 88 due to the roar
of the engines of the L88 cars, the Riverside Gold coupe spent many years of its life on display at the famous Gilmore Classic
Car Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan. Selected in 1988 for the Bloomington Gold Special Collection. This Corvette was inducted
into the Bloomington Gold Hall of Fame in 1998. Selected again for the 2003, 50th Anniversary Corvette celebration, the car
was part of the special collection that year. Bloomington Gold certified 2003 and NCRS Top Flight 2005.
David Van Weele's 1963 Z06 sold for $197,640. One of 199 Z06's built. Awards
include NCRS Top Flight, NCRS Duntov Award and Performance Verification, Bloomington Gold and part of very first Bloomington
Gold Special Collection, Chips Choice Award and twice in NCRS "Field of Dreams" at Orlando. Appeared twice in the Chevy tent
at the Daytona Rolex 24 race. Used as a reference car by Noland Adams in his restoration guide.

Rondine concept drew $1.76 million
Pininfarina, meet Corvette. Corvette, Pininfarina. This one-off 1963 concept car was created for the Paris
Auto Show and has been stored at the Pininfarina museum since new. Chevrolet commissioned the design house to build the car,
which is based on a 1963 Corvette chassis and has a 327cid/360-hp V8 under the hood. The car has a much more European feel,
and features fixed headlights and a "swallow tail" rear end.
Once in the spotlight, the Rondine drew more attention than any car yet. Bidding for the car quickly skyrocketed
past $1 million and was finally sold for of $1.6 million, with a final price tag of $1.76 million after auction fees. That's
quite a lot of change, but less money than other desirable concept cars have sold for in past years.
More to come!
